The Youth Program
On Tuesdays and Saturdays, the NCWC has practices just for wrestlers between the ages of five and twelve. They are run by the head of the youth program, Kelsey Dayler, as well as high school kids, parents, and others who assist with looking after the kids.
The youth program is a way to introduce kids to wrestling in a fun and age-appropriate way, incorporating principles of the sport into games and other activities. We adhere to the long-term athlete development model of coaching (information on this can be found here). This means for kids at young ages, we prioritize means fun and love for sport, physical literacy, and a broad range of skills over competition and early specialization.
Our youth program has grown significantly in the last couple of years, and is a great way to introduce young kids to the sport. While some of the older and more experienced middle school kids participate in open practices as well, we recommend that all children under twelve start in the youth program to learn the basics of the sport before moving to the open program.
